PfCONA is Seeking Business/Organization Sponsors for Welcome to Pflugerville Project

***** ***** UPDATED NEWS RELEASE ***** ***** UPDATED NEWS RELEASE ***** *****

The Welcome to Pflugerville Project*, sponsored by the Pflugerville Council of Neighborhood Associations (PfCONA) and the Pflugerville Police Department the past few years, is asking for your assistance in finding additional sponsors for this community-building effort.

If you have personal business relationships with a local business or organization that you think might be interested, we would appreciate if you can forward this E-mail to them or let us know.  Below is an overview of our program. - Thank you.

  • PfCONA has developed the Welcome to Pflugerville Project to welcome every new resident to the Pflugerville area. PfCONA is looking for area businesses to become a proud sponsor to keep this effort going and to show they are open for business, downtown businesses are, and those in the city as a whole.

  • The goals of this project are to: welcome every new person to Pflugerville; educate them about Crime Prevention, related citizen training, and introduce them to their local police force; provide Voter Registration cards; and, to make new residents aware of local shopping opportunities and community organization services--to give them a good impression of Pflugerville.

  • The welcome kits are delivered by Pflugerville police officers on weekends as time allows, as part of their community policing effort, including promotion of home security surveys and neighborhood watch. Deliveries of kits average about 100-150 per month.

  • Sponsorships to make this effort possible are available in two levels:

    • $75 for 500 kits (25% discount from $100)

    • $150 for 1000 kits (25% discount from $200)

  • Businesses are encouraged to provide some form of advertising or coupon or welcome message to be placed in the information packet that will be delivered with each kit. Advertising can be just about anything. Previous sponsors have provided 3"x3" magnets, used card stock, used colored paper, used color ink, or a simple black text on white 8.5" x 11" paper. We respectively request nothing larger than 8.5" x 11". We prefer something that will fit within a regular business size envelope. The best size is less than 4" by less than 9". Anything that is 8.5" x 11" needs to be pre-folded in a tri-fold manner.

  • Checks may be made payable to PfCONA

  • Generally, advertisements and checks will be picked up by PfCONA officers.

  • Our project is describe in more detail at our webpage: www.pfcona.org/MugProject.htm

We would like advertisements available for pick up by Friday, Nov. 4th.   However, if that date does not work for you, please contact me and we can discuss what will.

The PfCONA Welcome to Pflugerville Project contact is Jeff Sims, PfCONA Vice Chair. He can be reached at 835-3353 (work) or 670-9636 (home) or jssims@cox.net.

*Also known as the Welcome Mug Program, since mugs are included as a welcome gift at this time. This news release has been updated since being sent out to Chamber and Downtown Association for forwarding to its members.

LOCAL AUSTIN AREA HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS

Pflugerville Community-wide Relief Effort (Churches, City, County, PISD, PfCONA Members, and more)

Pflugerville Community-wide Initiative - Relief/Evacuee Effort Contact
(main contact/collection location)

Pastor Richard Coaxum or Necee Grayson at 251-5578 or E-mail pastor@stmarybaptist.com. Address: 1202 Pecan St. Click here for additional info/links on city website. Office Hours: 10am to 2:30pm, but has been earlier and later. The Pflugerville Community-wide Initiative is focusing on evacuees coming to Pflugerville area and families assisting those families, since others are being taking care of in Austin.

We are still seeing Katrina survivors (who are now getting housing) and added to the mix are Rita survivors, who are trying to figure out what to do next.  Katrina had given us a wealth of experience.  Clothes items are fine and we can't handle any more.  Most are being stored at Jack's AAA storage and are brought back to St. Mary's as needed.  Non-perishable food items are still accepted as well as housewares (pots, pans, dishes, flatware, etc.)

PISD Hurricane Relief Efforts
In PISD schools, as of Oct. 6th, there are 192 Katrina-related students, 39 Rita-related students, and 7 new employees/substitutes as a result of evacuations. AISD has 938.

PISD Project HELP has placed students in schools and provides them breakfast, lunch, school supplies, clothing, and other support/programs. School counselors have been involved in counseling and related training. Almost every campus has something going on in relation to raising money or collecting items/supplies (see examples below). Monies go to district and then is distributed to organizations. District is meeting the week of Oct. 10th to disburse the district Katrina funds that were collected across the district. At least 2,000 backpacks have been donated to PISD along with school supplies. District is funneling some donations to The Storehouse at AAA Storage at 445 FM 685 and North Rural Community Center at 15822 Foothill Farms Loop. Some items such as school supplies are being kept at PISD Opportunity Center for distribution via Project HELP.

The district is working with Pflugerville Relief/Evacuee efforts through main Pflugerville Community-wide Initiative contact, St. Mary's Baptist Church. Some PISD schools have been temporary shelters or Red Cross shelters as needed. FEMA and Governor's Division of Emergency Management has said the schools will be eligible for 100% reimbursement of emergency expenses.

Other examples of schools helping with relief effort:

  • Connally High School HOSA (Health Occupations) members collected money during lunchtimes. Coaches collected over $1000.  School total is over $2200. Booster Club will do a canned food drive.  They may do supply drive for displaced teachers.

  • Pflugerville Elementary is conducting a supply drive for all district students.
  • River Oaks has collected about $443. A private donor gave $500 and they have put them in contact with an individual so that can be handled separately for the 10 evacuees they currently have.  They are planning to have a drive now to collect gently used items to help our students.
  • Rowe Lane collected the 5 essentials and a parent took them to the collection site.
  • Spring Hill Elementary collected $463.97 and is collecting socks for a program called "Solemates" sponsored by the Salvation Army, the Assistance Leagues of Austin and Georgetown, and KXAN.

Other Pflugerville Fundraising Efforts
In addition to the national efforts underway on behalf of hurricane disaster victims, a local effort is still underway in regard to Fallen Warrior Memorial. See www.fallenwarriormemorial.org. $100K is needed and $85K has been raised. Way to go Pflugerville! Just a little bit more to go! Also, AngelHeart Children's Shelter recently completed raising funds for a down payment on the property they lease along SH130. Old Town NA did a garage sale on Sept. 10th on behalf of this shelter for abused and neglected children.

Fairways of Blackhawk Held 2nd Annual Food Drive for Storehouse Food Pantry

On August 27th they had nine volunteers canvas the neighborhood for bags of groceries.  They had a 60% increase in the amount of bags from last year and hope to do even better next year.  The volunteers at The Storehouse were eagerly waiting for the delivery of bags and they had their work cut out for them as 142 were dropped off.

Mainlane Closure: I35 @ SH45 N
I35 north and southbound lanes will be closed intermittently beginning in September 2005. The closures and detour are necessary to accomodate the construction of the multilevel I35 interchange at SH45N. The mainlane closures are designed to protect the traveling public from exposure to construction and demolition. Information will be posted on road conditions/advisories on www.dot.state.tx.us. A map showing frontage road detours and other info on tollway project can be found at www.texastollways.com. If you have any questions or would like additional info call 225-1473.

The Storehouse food pantry in Pflugerville is busy!

Volunteers are unloading and sorting groceries. Others are filling up bags and restocking shelves. Food doesn’t seem to stay on the shelves very long lately. Between hurricanes Katrina and Rita, ever increasing food prices, and the holiday season just around the corner, the need for food continues to increase.

Food drives are a wonderful way to help. Any subdivision, neighborhood, organization, club, or school that is interested in having a food drive can contact The Storehouse food drive coordinator, Monique Goode, at 990-8595 or 694-3374 or 1monique@cox-internet.com. She will help you with ideas, fliers, grocery bags, and a list of needed food items. Saxony subdivision will have a food drive on Saturday, October 15th. All food items will be donated to the Storehouse food pantry in Pflugerville.

Pancake Breakfast Raises $6,500 for Fallen Warrior Memorial
Pflugerville families filled the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church to eat pancakes and raise money for the Fallen Warrior Memorial. A bigger than expected crow showed up. Pflugerville Pfamilies Pfirst, the community group hosting the event, raised more than $6,500. After the pancake breakfast, the committee that started raising money last January in hopes of placing a bronze sculpture in Pflugerville Park by Veteran's Day this November is about $15,000 away from reaching its $100,000 goal. Julia Ruiz, who lives in Katymead, and Dana Bartholomew, who lives in Willow Creek, coordinated this event. [From 10/6/05 Pflugerville Pflag story]

Update on SH45/SH130 Southwest Corner Frontage Road/Entrance & Exit

PfCONA E-mail to and from Commissioner Karen Sonleitner:

PfCONA Chair: Commissioner Sonleitner, Thank you for continuing to forward the turnpike authority newsletter. In relation to connectivity and commercial development-related concerns expressed by Pflugerville City Council and citizens, are you working with Rep. Strama, our Council, our City Staff, and others to bring a frontage road to SH45 along southwest corner of SH45/SH130 intersection, along with entrance and exits in that area? If so, I wanted to pass on any news from your end to those who receive our PfCONA E-Newsletter.

Note: See most recent PfCONA E-Newsletter sent to you for E-mail sent to Rep. Strama and his response to PfCONA. Charles Simon is a city staff contact in relation to study city is involved with to help show that a frontage road, etc. would benefit SH45. See Chuck Larosche, city councilman, as a Council contact.

Commissioner Sonleitner: I'm not sure where those talks left off---part of the issue was that Pflugerville cut back on its financial commitment to pay for its right of way off 45.  Couple that with frontage roads only occurring where there was a land lock situation--since dollars were tight the frontage roads were put off until a later date---once the road is established and debt started to be paid off.  That was the buzz from months ago---I don't know of active talks to re-open frontage road discussions.  Remember, this was supposed to be a limited access highway---entrance and exit ramps and frontage only to deal with land-lock situations.  It got beyond that, but there are huge segments were that is exactly what happened.

September Correspondence with Lions Club
PfCONA Chair: I am taking the liberty of adding you to our Pflugerville Council of Neighborhood Associations contact roster since you are a Pflugerville Lions Club contact. Now that we have your E-mail you will be receiving information that PfCONA shares with neighborhood/community leaders. Perhaps our groups can partner on a project together to bring our members together. Thanks for what you do in the community.

Lions Club President: I'll be glad to receive the PfCONA info. Part of our Lions Club mission is to help with selected community things. I've been wishing I could attend one of the PfCONA meetings sometime too, but it coincides with our Lions meeting night.

To give you more of an idea of some of the things we do, we’ve been approached recently about the Angelheart children shelter’s urgent need for funds to purchase their facility.  We’ll be considering a donation for that soon. We gave several thousand dollars to the Fallen Warriors Memorial fund.  We already donate regularly to help the needy in PISD schools, Austin Chidren’s Hospital, Austin Children’s Shelter, and other worthy local causes.  And we help to support Lions institutions like the Central Texas Lions Eyebank, the state Lions Camp in Kerrville (for disabled/diabetic kids), and the national Lions Leader Dog training center.

By the way, we’re also interested in adding some more members to our club, so please let me know if you should know of anyone interested in joining a service club. - Jim Hocker, j_hocker@swbell.net
